ANASTASSIA SKOPP — Artist Statement
The studio is where the noise stops.
There is a moment in the studio when everything goes quiet. Not because the world outside has stopped - it hasn't - but because the linen is stretched, the first colours are mixed, and the hands have started moving before the mind has finished talking. I paint on the floor, standing over the canvas, palette knife in hand. I never begin with a sketch. Often I don't even know what colours will come. I look at the bare fabric and wait - not for an idea, but for something quieter: a sense of what it wants to become. I have been reading Eckhart Tolle since 2017. His teaching didn't give me a philosophy. It gave me a practice - and that practice, I discovered, lives most naturally in paint.
In 2019 I attended his three-day retreat in Germany, an experience that cannot be put into words. Each flower I build with the knife is not planned. It arrives. The colour was chosen earlier, yes - but the petal itself happens in the Now. There is no past in that gesture. No future. Only the resistance of linen, the weight of paint, and the delicate silence that follows when the thinking mind finally steps aside. My roses are painted with a single small knife - the one I have had since my wedding in Russia. It came as part of a cutlery set, a gift to me and my husband. I never learned what it was meant for. I only know what it does now.
My branches are made with a technique I discovered entirely by accident and have never shared. They are the most recognisable element of my work - the one I am asked about most. Some things are worth keeping. This is what I paint. Not flowers. Not gardens. Not decoration. I paint the reminder - that there is somewhere to return to.
If you feel something standing in front of one of these works - a kind of stillness, an exhale you didn't know you were holding - then you already understand what they are made of.
