Eckhart Tolle once wrote: you are walking along a path at night, surrounded by thick fog. The flashlight is your conscious presence. The clear space in front of you is the Now.
I didn’t plan to paint this metaphor. But when the painting was finished, I saw it there. Branches close to the eye - distinct, alive, present. Branches further away - dissolving into the same mist that holds the background together, softly, without insistence. Linen breathes through all of it, pale and steady, the surface that was there before anything arrived on it.
This is not a painting about what cannot be seen. It is a painting about what can - right now, in the narrow clear space that is the present moment.
The clear space is small. But it is enough.
