Smoked Rose - 80 × 60 × 2 cm / 31.5 × 23.6 × 0.8 in
There are nights when the air simply stops. No wind, no relief — heat sits low, and whatever the gardens outside are releasing (and we have several — ours, the neighbours’, each with their own roses and other flowers) stops separating into individual scents. Somewhere it’s sharp and hot, somewhere fresher, almost like tea — but all of it dissolves into the same darkness and the same heavy, unmoving air.
I painted this during days of intense heat, when nothing cooled down even at night. Roses in deep pink and violet emerge from near-black ground. Branches cross unhurried, half-lit — the way a garden looks when you smell it before you see the flowers themselves.
Stand in front of this painting the way you’d stand outside on a windless, heavy night. Not trying to see clearly. Just noticing what reaches you anyway.
