White Roses - 60 × 60 cm / 23.6 × 23.6 in
Not everything on this branch is really there. Some leaves I painted thick and textured — they catch light from across the room. Others are only shadows: flat, dark shapes with no weight behind them, as if the branch remembers a leaf that already fell.
Natural linen shows through most of this canvas, undisturbed. A single branch moves across it, carrying real leaves in vivid green alongside their own ghosts. Small white roses appear where the branch is busiest — pale and quiet against so much dark green and darker shadow.
I built this the way I build most of my work — no sketch, the knife finding its own path across the fabric. What’s unusual here is the doubling: presence and its shadow, painted side by side, neither one asked to explain the other.
You don’t need to decide which leaves are real. The branch didn’t seem to either.
