Pink has never belonged to one culture, one century, or one meaning. In eighteenth-century France, it signalled aristocratic wealth — Madame de Pompadour commissioned her own particular shade from the Sèvres porcelain works, dense enough to be seen as a statement. In Japan, it belongs to sakura — cherry blossoms that open for two weeks and fall, celebrated precisely because they don’t last. In pre-twentieth-century Europe, it was worn by men as a mark of power, a lighter shade of red, itself the colour of command.
The Pink Mood triptych doesn’t choose between these histories. It holds all three at once.
Three linen canvases, each 60 × 60 cm, painted with palette knife, branches and roses moving across lavender-to-violet grounds that shift subtly from piece to piece. Pink Mood I gathers its roses into dense clusters — abundance, the way Pompadour understood it. Pink Mood II lets its petals scatter and fall — brevity, the way sakura is honoured. Pink Mood III insists on its colour without apology — assertion, the way eighteenth-century Paris once wore it.
Together, they don’t explain pink. They simply refuse to let it be just one thing.
