Burgundy has never asked for permission to be taken seriously. The color takes its name from a French wine region, and for centuries it belonged only to those who could afford it - the dyes were rare, the process was slow, and depth like this simply cost more to make. Something of that history still lives in the shade: a weight that doesn't announce itself, doesn't need to.

I didn't choose this color to decorate anything. I chose it because it holds still under scrutiny. Where a brighter red might ask to be noticed and then forgotten, burgundy asks something different of the eye - patience, the willingness to stay a little longer before the roses even come into focus.

Working with palette knife on natural linen, I let this ground settle first, dense and unhurried, before anything else arrived. The roses came after - pink, plum, pale yellow, each caught at its own moment of opening. Some are fully unfurled, already giving everything they have. Others are still closed tight, holding something back, the way certainty sometimes takes longer to arrive than we'd like. Tiny white blossoms scatter across the darker ground almost like punctuation, or like something remembered rather than something seen directly - the kind of detail that surfaces only once you've stopped looking for the obvious thing.

There is a particular scent linen carries even after the paint has fully cured, something between raw cotton and the faint sweetness of dried pigment, and I think that smell belongs to this painting as much as the color does. Burgundy was never meant to be quiet. It was meant to be trusted with weight - the kind of weight I wanted this canvas to hold without ever feeling heavy.
