I've been thinking a lot about how the same color can hold completely different meanings depending on where and when you find it. This piece started with jade — the deep green stone that's been placed in burials for thousands of years, not as decoration, but as protection for whatever comes after. Purity, virtue, immortality. That's what this particular green has meant to people for a very long time.
I built this canvas around that same quiet permanence. The roses are pale against a deep, layered green — some fully open, others still closed as buds, each one caught at its own moment. I didn't try to make them agree with each other.
The branches move through the composition the way they always do in my work: I set the direction, but where each one actually lands, how far it reaches, whether a bud opens all the way — that's never really been mine to decide. My work lives in the space between control and its absence, and this piece felt like the clearest example of that yet.
Jade Green I is about trusting a color that people have trusted for thousands of years to carry something all the way through.
