There is a particular red that only appears once something has stopped burning and started glowing - low, steady, holding heat. This canvas lives in that register. The ground is worked in slow, overlapping passes of deep crimson and near-black, until the surface stops looking like paint and starts looking like something warm seen in the dark. Roses surface out of it in white and soft yellow, catching light the way coals do at the centre of a dying fire, when the flame is gone but the heat is still moving under the surface. The branches sit low across the canvas, thick and unhurried. What I was after here is a velvet kind of warmth - the feeling of a winter evening with red wine and a fireplace, the kind of warmth that wraps around you and holds you after a restless, stressful day.
