Lime - Violet Blooms, 50 × 50 × 2 cm / 19.7 × 19.7 × 0.8 in
Attention has a colour, and it is rarely the one I plan. It is the sharp lime at the edge of a shadow, the violet that appears only when the light begins to leave. Lime-violet Blooms is built on that narrow moment, when warm and cool stand side by side and neither gives way. Petals of acid yellow and fresh lime sit thick on a thin dark branch, ridged and glossy where the palette knife lifted away, and some are tipped with violet, as if one colour had spilled into the other. In the upper right, small violet buds open on hair-thin stems. Dark leaves, a smoky mix of violet-blue and forest green, gather lower down, where the olive spray softens into shadow, while the top of the canvas stays open linen. I paint without a sketch: I set the direction, and the branch decides where it lands. A small painting that asks for one full minute of your attention.
Lime-violet Blooms shares its linen ground and its spray-softened light with Still Unfolding and Violet Bloom (both 50 × 50 cm). It stands between them, carrying the violet of one and the yellow-green of the other, so the three can hang together as a triptych, or any two as a pair. On soft grey or warm beige walls, on deep blue-grey and even on terracotta, the lime and violet keep their clarity, and the natural linen tone sits easily beside wood, stone and soft textiles.
