Ma, the Quiet Space - 120 x 160 cm (47,2 x 63 in)
I never planned the empty part of this painting. It arrived the way the pause between two breaths arrives: unannounced, and more alive than anything around it. The Japanese call such an interval ma: not emptiness, but the space that lets everything around it be seen. Ma, the Quiet Space is built around that pause. Two dense masses of branches, one pouring in from the upper left corner, the other rising from the lower right, reach toward each other with hair-fine twigs and never quite meet. Violet petals, thick and ridged where the palette knife lifted away, mix with fresh lime leaves, forest green and the occasional pale yellow bud. Between them the canvas is given over to soft olive and mist-green spray and open linen, with a few pale glows floating in it like light through leaves. Eckhart Tolle describes the pause between two breaths as a doorway into stillness, and I paint toward that doorway: I set the direction, the branch decides where it lands, and the largest part of this canvas is the part where my hand stopped. It asks for the length of one slow breath.
At this scale it holds a wall on its own: against warm plaster, soft grey or deep blue-grey, the violet and olive read clearly, and the natural linen tone sits easily beside wood and soft textiles.
