I work in the space between what I control and what I don't. The spray decides for itself how densely the light falls, where it pools and where it thins — I choose the direction, never the size. The branches are the same: I set them moving, but their length, their turn, the colour they finally take is theirs. Only two things here are fully mine — the leaves, and the roses, shaped one by one with a small fruit knife from my wedding cutlery. Everything else arrived. The green went down first, layer over layer, until the surface stopped being a background and became depth, and the branches began to move through it the way a hand moves through cold water. There is a smell in a wood after rain, when the ground is still holding night and something above has already begun to warm. Nothing here happens quickly. The branches are not going anywhere. They simply are, and the light finds them. This is how a life works: we make our effort, and what grows from it is not what we planned — sometimes a hard branch, sometimes a flower we could never have designed.
