Komorebi, Clearing - 60 × 60 × 4 cm / 23.6 × 23.6 × 1.6 in
Half of this canvas is empty, and that is the half I care about most. The green there is not waiting to be filled — it is where the light gathers before anything grows into it. I sprayed it in slow passes and let the pigment settle where it wanted; density and scale were never my decision. Then I let the branches enter from one side only, low and unhurried, and they took their own form as they went. The large blossoms opened under a hairdryer, the paint moving on its own — I could choose the colour and nothing else, not the shape, not how far each one would open. The small roses and the leaves I made entirely by hand, and the difference between the two is visible if you stand close: the deliberate and the given, side by side on the same surface. That is the whole subject. We direct what we can and the rest arrives — sometimes as something unruly, sometimes as something more generous than we would have dared to intend.
