I painted Burgundy Night in the quiet stretch after sunset, when colours deepen and the air cools. It opens with fresh pink rosebuds and sharp green leaves, a bright first impression that settles slowly into something deeper. In the heart, plum and oxblood petals gather around a soft yellow-green glow, like lamplight in cool evening air. The base is dark and quiet: wine-coloured linen, black branches, the slow warmth of the hour just after dusk. Top notes: pink rosebuds, young green leaves, a flicker of lemon light. Heart notes: oxblood petals, plum shadows, wet earth after rain. Base notes: deep burgundy linen, dark branches, stillness. I work without sketches, on the floor, building the branches and petals with a palette knife in thick, deliberate strokes and spraying the glow with an airbrush so it stays weightless. The painting changes as the day does, warmer in the morning, deeper by lamplight, and it lingers long after you have looked away. Its deep wine ground lives as comfortably on a pale wall as on a dark one. The painting carries no signature on the front, so it can be hung in three positions, and the composition shifts with each turn. I paint the reminder: that there is somewhere to return to.
